The Mountain Empire Children’s Choral Academy (MECCA) is seeking a highly-qualified and energetic person to lead a new training choir based in Emory, Virginia. For over 30 years, MECCA has sought to enrich the lives of youth in the Tri-Cities region through a program of vocal music education and through the study and performance of the world’s great choral literature. The organization currently offers a Chorister Choir open to all children in grades 1-3 that rehearses in Johnson City, TN, and seeks to expand by offering a similar ensemble that will meet in Emory, VA. The primary purposes of the Chorister Choir program are:
To give beginning singers an excellent musical education that emphasizes proper vocal production, posture, breathing, and diction.
To introduce and reinforce the skills of note reading, music theory, and solfege.
To provide opportunities to perform age-appropriate repertoire, including partner songs and two-part harmony.
To offer an exceptional experience that will prepare singers for continued participation in other MECCA choirs.
This part-time position involves leading a weekly rehearsal for the new Emory Chorister Choir on Thursday afternoons for one hour. Rehearsals will be held on the Emory and Henry College campus from 4:30-5:30 PM. The MECCA calendar runs from mid-August to mid-May, with major concerts in December and May every year.
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Music or Music Education
Knowledge of/experience with Kodaly Method and Curwen hand signs preferred
Ability to create and maintain rapport with children ages 6-9
Ability to plan and manage active rehearsals, utilizing age-appropriate teaching methods
Ability to adapt to changing situations
Excellent organizational skills
